Black Lives Matter

Of course, Black lives matter, as of any race whether White from Europe or America, the Middle East and North African, Hispanic and Latino Americans, Asia, Multiracial, and others. People matter! The debate continues and it’s a subject which intrigues me as Britain’s traders originate from Africa where slavery continues today.

What is the extent and nature of modern slavery in the region? On any given day in 2021, an estimated 7 million men, women, and children were living in modern slavery in Africa, a prevalence of 5.2 people in modern slavery for every thousand people. (Source)

For those who were unaware Sumer or Sumeria is still thought to be the birthplace of slavery, which grew out of Sumer into Greece and other parts of ancient Mesopotamia. The Ancient East, specifically China and India, didn't adopt the practice of slavery until much later, as late as the Qin Dynasty in 221 BC. (Source)

"Black Lives Matter (BLM) is an international activist movement which started in 2013, originating in the African-American community, that campaigns against violence and systemic racism toward black people. BLM regularly protests police killings of black people and broader issues of racial profiling, police brutality, and racial inequality in the United States criminal justice system. (Source)

One debate which recently occurred in England to discuss the demolishing of an historical statue from June 2020, when a group of protesters pulled the statue from its pedestal in Bristol, England, and rolled it into a nearby harbor. Protesters had targeted the statue given Colston's involvement in the Royal African Company, a vital enterprise in the British slave trade. (Source)

This subject is full of controversy, so an interesting one to discuss with your teacher and classmates who might also have an opinion about it.

Take care!
