Overweight Bliss

Christmas is around the corner, and festive time means overeating. Don’t you just love those extra treats that make you feel good? Yes, indeed turkey with white bread sauce and cranberry preserve with full range of extras followed by Christmas pudding, brandy sauce, and whipped double cream served as on Christmas day in the UK make it all worthwhile.

Experts mainly agree that being overweight falls under the category of obese in that fat people will live less than so called healthy weight individuals. According to them obesity can reduce life expectancy. A study found that moderate obesity can reduce life expectancy by about 3 years, while severe obesity can shorten life by 10 years. Another study found that extreme obesity can shorten life expectancy by as much as 14 years.

That begs the question of if overweight people who hit the gym regularly would outlive so called healthy weight individuals. I asked Google, could an active overweight person outlive a healthy weight person and received a very interesting reply:

“People who are slightly overweight but not obese—as defined by their body mass index (BMI)— tend to live longer than their normal-weight counterparts, according to a new Danish study. But that has not always been the case.”

The online Independent study report from the United Kingdom clarifies:  “Indeed, I have seen research on Italian women showing that a BMI of 33 was associated with the longest life expectancy. In other studies, where obesity was actually further sub-divided, those with a BMI between 30 and 35 lived longer than those of so-called "normal" weight.

Rush to your local Italian restaurant and order pasta knowing full well that you are on a mission to pack on enough weight to fall between 30 to 35 BMI category. Seriously that isn’t the answer. However, being a little overweight isn’t the end of the world!

If you aren’t working out regularly then what are you waiting for. Exercise creates a healthy appetite!

Take care!
