Palmeiras faced Botafogo this Wednesday, in the pre-quarterfinals (last 16) of the 2024 Latin American Liberation Cup in an evening match at Allianz Parque, finishing the game 2-2.
Palmeiras has been eliminated from the competition, as after losing previously away from home 2-1 they failed to reverse the score. Palmeiras fans criticized most of the players who were on the field, and in addition have come down heavy on coach, Abel Ferreira:
"You can put this elimination on Abel Ferreira's account. Let him take full responsibility," said a fan after the 2nd goal. "The year ended in August! Congratulations to our Portuguese coach".
Another comment:
"He is the only one to blame. It's Abel who picks the team". On the other hand, some Palmeiras fans are asking for the coach's departure, a fact that has also occurred at other times in the 2024 season.
Another comment:
"There is no longer any climate for Abel Ferreira to remain at Palmeiras. The performance is totally different compared to past seasons." "It's always the same substitutions" It's time to change, no doubt," commented another fan.
With the elimination in the Liberation Cup, Palmeiras only has the Brazilian Championship A Series left to play. However, Botafogo is top of that division with a five-point advantage over Palmeiras. Nevertheless, there was a similar scenario last year, when Palmeiras turned it all around to win the Championship.
Although some fanatical fans are calling for Abel’s resignation the chart above shows that most fans still believe he should stay. If his performance level is anything to go by, eleven (11) trophies under his belt makes it easy to see he is a winner!
