Electrifying news came my way, so if your day didn't start so well, know that Elon Musk's couldn't be better. For the first time in history, an electric vehicle has become the best-selling vehicle in the world, with Tesla's Model Y as the sales leader.
The milestone was registered based on 53 markets around the globe and measured data from the first quarter of this year, changing a ranking that had not changed its first place for years. The podium looked like this:
🥇 Tesla Y | 267 thousand units
🥈 Toyota Corolla | 256 thousand units
🥉 Toyota Hilux | 214 thousand units
Tesla, as a whole, sold just over 745,000 units, which represents an increase of 69% compared to the previous year; something very relevant in any sector. The main buyers were China, the United States and Europe, in that order.
Interestingly, the Chinese are reciprocating international business with the USA, where Tesla an American multinational automotive and clean energy company from Austin, Texas, has its headquarters. This goes hand in hand with globalization and a stable environment.
What's even more impressive? The entry price of this Tesla SUV is 2x more expensive than the Corolla, which shows strength in the brand, especially in a not so favorable global economic period.
In 2022, Tesla Model Y was the top-selling electric car by far. Tesla had two of the best-selling electric vehicles, but Asian brands, especially BYD gave them tough competition. Among the top ten models, only the Volkswagen ID. 4 represented European automakers.
Musk had already said, in 2016, that his Model Y would be the best seller in the world. Despite being at the top of the rankings with one of its cars, Tesla is still not even one of the top 10 car makers in the world. Volks, Toyota, General Motors and Ford lead this ranking.
Have a great day!
